It was a ‘rock ‘n’ bowl’ time for Big Brothers/Big Sisters on Friday and Saturday (March 1st and 2nd) when bowlers came out for the annual Bowl for Kids Sake fundraiser as the Sunset Srip Bowling Alley in Owen Sound.
The event began Friday evening when more than 100 supporters came out for the fun ‘Rock ‘n’ Bowl’ and then continued into Saturday when two shifts of more than 200 took part.
It is an annual event for all ages with some dignitaries also participating in what is a major fundraising event given that the organization receives no government funding.
Since 1964, Big Brothers has been matching mentors with Little Brothers who need mentoring in a one-on-one relationship. It wasn’t until 2016 however, that Big Brothers and Big Sisters amalgamated to operate under one umbrella, relying on a Trillium grant, fundraising and individual and corporate sponsorship donations. Those involved become role models and develop relationships through common interests through two regular outings per month over a one-year commitment.
“We are thrilled with the turn-out this weekend,” said Board Chair, Andy McKee. “We raised $5,500 last night (Fri.) and will probably raise some $20,000 or more overall. It is a key fundraiser for us and people who support it know how much it means to us.”
‘Little Brother’, Porter Galbraith, who has been in the organization for 11 years, is in his last year as he gets ready to graduate high school and go off to college.
“My Big Brother, Kevin Brown, and I have done some really neat things. I am going to college to be a mechanic and Kevin and I actually built his small plane and we’ve become real friends.”
For many, the relationships develop into years-long friendships and, for those new to Canada, the organization has become a welcome into Canadian culture.
Big Brothers/Big Sisters is always looking for volunteers to help youth. Those potential mentors require a background reference and police check and then go through a training period.
