Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has laid an Arson charge in connection with a fire discovered yesterday afternoon at the popular Maitland Woods trail system.
Shortly after 4:30 p.m. on June 22, 2020 Huron OPP officers received a call from a concerned hiker in the Maitland Woods reporting someone had started a fire in the Maitland Woods located off of Parsons Court. Officers responded to the area and located the accused sitting by the medium sized fire he had started. The accused was found to be burning foliage and downed tree branches in a reckless manner.
The accused was arrested and taken into custody without incident. Goderich Fire Department responded to extinguish the fire.
A 29 year-old of no fixed address has been charged with:
- Arson – Damage to Property
- Fail to Comply with Probation Order – Two Counts
- Fail to Comply with Release Order – Two Counts
The accused has since been released from custody with a court appearance scheduled for August 31, 2020 at the Ontario Court of Justice – Goderich.
