On Friday, November 24, 2023 10:00 PM the South Saugeen Special Olympics curling team while in Richmond Hill for preparations for their 2024 National Special Olympics had their rental car stolen with all their curling equipment.
After reporting the theft to York Regional Police Constables A. Smith and S. Berezin, York Regional Police managed to track down the curling equipment and return all their equipment within hours of the theft. Unfortunately, the rental vehicle was nowhere to be found. This quick police work allowed the local team the opportunity to participate in their training camp this past weekend.
The local South Saugeen Curling Team is made up of Skip, Aimee Gilchrist (Owen Sound); Vice, Duane Pountney (Owen Sound); Second, Kelsey Dow (Hanover); Lead, Melissa Liefso (Elmwood) and Alternate, Jason Scott (Port Elgin).
The South Saugeen Curling team would like to again thank officers Smith and Berezin and all their colleagues who “saved the day”. They would also like to thank all their Local Sponsors for their support for the upcoming games in Calgary and encourage local businesses to support their local Special Olympic athletes who are competing in the upcoming games.
