South Bruce Peninsula has a newly appointed Mayor

Deputy Mayor, Jay Kirkland, has accepted a nomination that appoints him to the position of Mayor of South Bruce Peninsula.
The bylaw appointing Jay Kirkland to the position of Mayor was unanimously passed by Council at its Tuesday, October 3rd Council meeting.
His appointment follows the recent resignation of Mayor Garry Michi following what was considered a breach as Mayor in relationship to First Nations.
Following his resignation as Mayor, Michi issued an apology to the community and First Nations for what were seen as disparaging remarks.
Kirkland has served six terms as a member of South Bruce Peninsula Council, three terms as Councillor and three as Deputy Mayor and is a local business owner.
“I would like to thank Council for having the confidence in me to lead the community.  I will remain fair and ensure that the municipality continues to be fiscally responsible,” said Kirkland in a media release.
A report will come forward at an upcoming meeting declaring that the Deputy Mayor’s seat will now be vacant and the report will then further outline options to fill the vacant seat.
