Southampton Curling Club hosted the third annual Ladies Bonspiel on Wednesday, January 23rd with eight teams from Wiarton, Owen Sound, Tara, Allenford, Meaford, Port Elgin and Southampton. This year was special as the Bonspiel was held in honour of Diane Martindale, a former Club member.
Diane Martindale was an active member of the Southampton Curling Club. In 2004, she represented the Club on the winning team at the Ladies Provincial Best Western Challenge Bonspiel and she took great pride int he Southampton club’s appearance. She kept the kitchen immaculate and ensured there were coffee supplies at all time. Every December, she and her husband Merv donated, prepared and served the Un-turkey Dinner, a complete lasagna dinner completed with ice cream sundaes. Unfortunately, on October 12, 2018, Diane lost her battle with cancer at the age of 66 and she is sorely missed by her family and the Club members.
The Bonspiel theme this year was ‘Our Home Town’ and each team had to tell some facts about its town and the benefits of living there. From Wiarton Willie to Tara’s woolly mammoth, Owen Sound’s Tom Thompson art gallery to Meaford’s Scarecrow Festival, how Allenford got its name to Port Elgin’s Pumpkinfest and Southampton’s Museum, there is something of interest in every community.
The Southampton Art Gallery also donated a special painting by artist Kathie Wright for a fundraising raffle. The work was won by Susan Fair of Allenford.
