In our last article, I talked about fundraising, and the top groups we donate to. This time I would like to talk more about fundraising. The 50/50 ticket sales is one way we raise money, and we draw at our once-monthly meetings. Traditionally, we hold a roast beef dinner in July and a Fish Fry in August every year, except this year. These are very important to us as this money is used to keep the lights on, pay taxes and other basic needs.
Unfortunately this year, we were unable to run either of these due to lack of finding a convener, that is, someone to take over the beef dinner from Don and Sharron Colter who announced last year that they were stepping down. The same goes for Wayne Morningstar and Dave Uren who have run the fish fry for many years. We truly appreciate their past efforts for both dinners as turnout has been excellent.
This year, we could not find anyone to step up to take over to arrange dinners. As is the case in all organizations, those willing to step up to help organize and run these things are the same few people each year. In these changing times, many groups are in the same difficulty of finding newer members to take over these important events and keep the tradition alive. If your group was able to overcome this sort of thing and are willing to share your strategy, please reach out to me.
This year, our old building has been getting attention both inside and out. Outside, Hofstrand Contracting has made repairs and installed new vinyl siding. Inside some structural repairs to the floor were followed by new vinyl flooring to most of the main hall.
Thanks to the guys of Bruce Men’s Shed, our bar area is under construction at the moment to be followed by paint. Cabinets donated to them are to be installed and with paint they will breathe new life and a new look into this area.
On a brighter note, past-President Richard Smith received recognition and was presented with a plaque.
