Lake Huron Fishing Club looking for volunteers

The Lake Huron Fishing Club is dedicated to ensuring future generations will have quality fishing opportunities. We operate two fish hatcheries, host the Classic Chantry Salmon Derby, initiate and supervise school hatchery projects, partner with Bruce Power to financially support several conservation projects, provide stream enhancements and environmental improvements, and assist government agencies on assessments.

The work of the LHFC relies on thousands of volunteer hours, and we need HELP in a number of areas: the Kincardine Hatchery, the Port Elgin Hatchery, the School Hatchery Program, and the Salmon Derby.

The Kincardine hatchery produces rainbow and brown trout for stocking Lake Huron. 60,000 rainbow and 4,000 brown trout currently are being raised in this hatchery. We are looking for volunteers to help our hatchery crews by committing one half hour for any day of the week. If interested please contact Rachel Kellard at rachelkellard@hotmail.com or Ron Kruilicki at vickru@hurontel.on.ca

The Port Elgin Hatchery produces salmon, rainbow and brown trout for stocking in Lake Huron. 100,000 salmon eggs, 9,000 rainbow trout and 4,000 brown trout currently are being raised in this hatchery. We are looking for volunteers to compliment hatchery crews for Friday, Saturday and Sunday. If interested please contact Gary Biederman at 519-832-5639 or Dave Myette at wildturkeydave@gmail.com

The School Hatchery Program currently hosts 47 schools by setting up aquariums with salmon eggs, until the salmon fry are released into Lake Huron. This valuable program helps young students observe first-hand the cycle of life.  Volunteers are needed to assist in the areas of Chesley, Hanover, Walkerton, Kincardine and Goderich. If interested in this very dynamic program, please contact Richard Elliott at Richard.elliott.jr13@gmail.com or 519-531-0918.

The Chantry Chinook Classic Salmon Derby has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for all of the Lake Huron Fishing Club conservation projects. It is the primary funding source. The Derby Committee and the LHFC are looking for a volunteer who would be interested in being the media spokesperson for all of our activities. If interested please contact Bert Kuntz at bkuntz@bmts.com or 519-389-4203. For all other inquiries regarding volunteer recruitment please contact Dick Verrips at dickverrips@gmail.com
