Students in Grades 4, 5, and 6 are invited to share what home means to them in Habitat for Humanity Canada’s annual Meaning of Home national writing contest,
opening January 5, 2026.
Three grand prize winners from across Canada will each earn a $30,000 grant to help their local Habitat for Humanity build an affordable place to call home for a family in need.
Habitat for Humanity Grey Bruce believes a national winner could very well come from right here in our region.
Local students in Grades 4–6 from schools within the Bruce-Grey Catholic District
School Board and the Bluewater District School Board are encouraged to take part. Our
communities are full of talented young writers and compassionate youth leaders, and this contest is a powerful opportunity for them to shine.
It’s free to participate, and every single entry—simply by being submitted—earns a $10 donation for Habitat for Humanity Grey Bruce. These contributions directly support the construction of safe, affordable homes for local families in need.
This year’s contest features exciting prizes for students and classrooms nationwide.
Three grand prize winners will each receive an iPad, a pizza party for their entire class, and a $30,000 grant directed to their local Habitat for Humanity organization. Nine runners-up will each be awarded a $10,000 grant for their local Habitat, along with an iPad
and a class pizza party.
More than a writing competition, the ‘Meaning of Home’ contest helps connect youth to their communities. It teaches students about the ongoing need for affordable housing, the Habitat mission, the importance of giving back and funds new Habitat home builds.
Since the contest began in 2007, more than 137,000 students have participated, raising over $3 million in support of Habitat for Humanity affiliates nationwide.
Every student who participates helps make an impact right here in our community. These entries do more than express creativity—they help build strength, stability, and hope for families.
Habitat for Humanity Grey Bruce is actively promoting the contest locally and encourages teachers and parents of Grade 4–6 students to reach out for resources, classroom materials, or to arrange an information session at their child’s school.
