Medical students experience rural medicine and life in Grey Bruce

Medical students from the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry at Western University and from Queen’s University School of Medicine recently learned and trained at Brightshores Health System. The students joined Brightshores for their Discovery Week (Schulich) and ROMP Week, through the Rural Ontario Medical Program (Queen’s) from May 26th – May 30th.

“The week was a great way for the medical students to meet with patients, interact with our team members and experience firsthand the benefits of practising in our rural region,” said Dr. Michael Williams, Brightshores Vice President, Medical Affairs. “By choosing to practice in Grey Bruce, physicians can enjoy a fulfilling career with meaningful impact on their community, while embracing the natural beauty and pace of rural Ontario living.”

During their placements at Brightshores, medical students were exposed to teamwork and collaboration within a rural setting, getting a fulsome experience of what a day in the life of a local healthcare provider looks like. It was also a unique opportunity to discover all that the local communities in Grey and Bruce counties have to offer.

“Participating in these events is a source of pride for Brightshores,” said Dr. Williams. “This initiative helps us to recruit skilled and compassionate professionals to our rural communities, while also showcasing the training and support we provide to help them thrive – ultimately building a strong future for the patients and families we serve.”
