Recent phone survey finds strong support for Bruce Power is strong in Grey-Bruce-Huron

During recent independent telephone polling conducted across the region, Ipsos found the COVID-19 pandemic and health care are the top issues for residents, while their support for Bruce Power’s Life-Extension Program remains very high at 82 per cent.

Nine of 10 residents in Bruce, Grey and Huron counties believe Bruce Power operates a safe facility, is a good community citizen, and contributes to the community in a positive way.

“Bruce Power is humbled to receive continued strong community support that empowers us to continue to provide clean, reliable, low-cost electricity to Ontario families and businesses,” said John Peevers, Director of Community and Media Relations, and Economic Development. “Though the support of residents in Bruce, Grey and Huron counties is something we will never take for granted, we are encouraged to see such a strong belief in nuclear energy and Bruce Power’s future in our region.”

Eighty per cent of respondents believe Bruce Power keeps people updated through regular communications, while 86 per cent of people familiar with Bruce Power feel ‘excellent,’ ‘very good,’ or ‘good’ about the organization.

On the topic of selecting a site for Canada’s used nuclear fuel, two-thirds of respondents are aware of the consultation process underway through the Nuclear Waste Management Organization. While a majority of respondents (69 per cent) support the consultation and study process, those who were aware of the proposal prior to polling are significantly more likely to say they strongly support the process. Awareness of and support for the process to select a nuclear waste site has significantly increased since the company’s previous polling on this topic in 2017.

“Bruce Power will continue to listen to our neighbours to ensure we are providing residents with enough information and addressing the issues that concern them while also keeping them apprised of our Life-Extension Program, which began Jan. 1, 2016, and remains on track,” Peevers added. “As we progress our first Major Component Replacement Project, which began in Unit 6 over a year ago, we will maintain our focus on listening to our residents and continuing to do all we can to support our communities.”
