Thomson scores two as Winterhawks win 4th straight

The Saugeen Shores Winterhawks ran their winning streak to four games on Saturday night with a win over the Shelburne Muskies in Grand Valley.

The Winterhawks jumped out to a 4-1 lead following a four-goal 2nd period, but Shelburne made it close, as the Winterhawks hung on for the 4-3 win.

Eric Peicheff got the start in goal for the Winterhawks, and he came up big, blanking the Muskies through the first half of the game.

Jay Thomson opened the scoring early in the 2nd period, converting a goal assisted by Michael Johnstone and James McHaig at 3:24 of the middle frame.

Thomson added his second of the night just five minutes later making it 2-0, with assists to Aeric Annetta and Johnstone.

The Hawks continued to roll in the 2nd period, with Miles MacLean making it 3-0 at 12:57, as Johnstone picked up his third assist of the game, along with Josh Hopkin adding a helper.

The Muskies finally got to Peicheff at 15:16 of the 2nd to cut the lead to 3-1, but Matt Shields answered right back on a goal assisted by Curtis Johnston to make it a 4-1 Winterhawks lead after two.

Shelburne pushed hard in the 3rd period, as Luke Richardson and Ryan Hunter scored less than a minute apart to make it a one goal game with 11 minutes left in the 3rd.

Peicheff and the Winterhawks defenders shut it down from there, hanging on to a 4-3 win over the Muskies.

The win continues Peicheff’s perfect record on the season, improving to 4-0-0 since joining the team.

The Winterhawks now sit at 7-4-1 on the season, good for sole possession of 5th place in the WOAA Sr. Hockey standings.

They will be back in action next Sunday, December 9th, for an afternoon home game when they host the Minto 81’s at 2:00 p.m. at The Plex.
