At the first Labour Council meeting of 2026 executive elections were held and all positions were filled.
“In 2026 very little is more important than progressive voices in the public forum” says re-elected President of the Grey Bruce Labour Council, Kevin Smith.
Smith points to the very loud voices telling people to discard diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) and that a person’s right to exist is up for debate just because they love differently, worship differently or simply look different. In this cacophony of vitriol strong voices in support of DEI, the rights of workers and the vulnerable are more important than ever.
According to re-elected Labour Council VP for Grey County, Chris Stephen, “The Grey Bruce Labour Council, celebrating seventy years of progressive advocacy this year, in electing a strong executive supported by dedicated union affiliate delegates will empower the voices of progress and social justice across our region”.
On January 26th, the entire executive of the Grey Bruce Labour Council was re-elected. This also included the trustees that will oversee the regular finances so ably managed by the much appreciated treasurer of the Labour Council, Gord Cale.
Re-elected Labour Council VP for Bruce, Dave Trumble said he, “… sees the comprehensive re-election by the delegates to Labour Council as an endorsement of past performance and an act of faith that our work will continue to progress social justice, workers rights and to provide a home for unions, partners and allies and friends of racialized persons and those suffering discrimination.”
It is early in 2026, and we see many of the same struggles and battles re-emerging. Four preventable occupational deaths across Canada already and external and internal attacks of Canadian sovereignty. In addition we see continued underfunding of public services with the explicit goal of privatizing these services and attacks from a wide variety of right wing organizations that work to divide us when the correct course of action is to collectively attack regressive governments and the billionaires that support them.
With this renewed mandate the Grey Bruce Labour Council executive and union affiliate delegates will do all that is possible to progress the rights of workers, proper funding of public services and to show leadership when it comes to diversity/equity/inclusion.
