The Grey Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) respond to a call involving a two-person kayak capsizing off the coast of Big Bay and putting both occupants into the water.
On May 24, 2025, at 3:30 p.m., the Grey Bruce OPP, alongside local emergency responders, received a report of a two-person kayak capsizing of the coast of Big Bay (Georgian Bluffs) and putting both occupants into the water.
The Grey Bruce OPP Marine Unit responded to the scene out on the water and located four individuals in total – two remained in their kayaks, while the other two were in the water alongside a capsized kayak. None of the individuals involved were wearing lifejackets.
All four individuals were brought ashore and taken to local hospital for further assessment, as a result of the cold temperature of the water. It was determined at hospital that all injuries were deemed to be non life threatening.
The Grey Bruce OPP wants to remind everyone that the only life jacket that can save your life, is the one that you are wearing.
There is no one single cause that leads to drownings but there are common contributors. Basic safety practices such as learning to swim at an early age; wearing a lifejacket while on a vessel or in water; adult supervision of children while swimming; and not drinking and boating can make the difference between surviving, or not.
The Grey Bruce OPP Marine Unit recommends that vessel owners/operators download the Safe Boating Guide found here: https://tc.canada.ca/en/marine-transportation/marine-safety/office-boating-safety.
The Grey Bruce OPP is reminding the public that being impaired on a vessel is a crime and carries the same penalties as driving a vehicle while impaired. Report dangerous activities by calling 1-888-310-1122. Should you wish to remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS), where you may be eligible to receive a cash reward of up to $2000.
