Contract signed for radiation protection services on Canada’s largest infrastructure project

Bruce Power is announcing today that it has agreed to a $58-million contract with Nuvia Canada Inc., which will provide radiation protection services in support of all programs during execution of the Major Component Replacement (MCR) Unit 6 project. Bruce Power’s Life Extension Program is Canada’s largest infrastructure project.

Under the contract, Nuvia will provide core services to perform the duties of direct radiation protection assistance for assigned work. The Toronto-based company will execute these services in support of all programs during the Unit 6 refurbishment where radiation protection is required, as well as other activities including licensed source handling, and the transfer and receipt of designated materials.

“Nuvia has more than four decades of experience training and developing Radiation Protection Technicians, and an impressive track record when it comes to supporting the safe execution of programs like our Unit 6 major component replacement,” said Mike Rencheck, Bruce Power President and Chief Executive Officer. “We’re pleased that Nuvia has joined as a partner in completing our Life Extension Program, which is creating and sustaining 22,000 highly-skilled jobs across Ontario, including Bruce, Grey and Huron counties, while delivering 30 per cent of Ontario’s electricity at 30 per cent less than the average cost to generate residential power.”

Earlier this year, Nuvia opened a new Radiological Protection Training Centre/Project office in Tiverton, and started training technicians in preparation to support Bruce Power.

“As an international leader in nuclear, Nuvia is pleased that we’re able to support Canada’s largest infrastructure project with this new agreement,” said Arkell Farr, Nuvia Canada’s Chief Executive Officer. “Safety is a core value for our business and we look forward to helping Bruce Power safely and successfully execute the Unit 6 MCR program.”
