Kincardine Town Council will reaffirm its support for the deep geologic repository (DGR) being proposed by Ontario Power Generation (OPG) when it votes on an Amending Agreement at its February 14th meeting.
The DGR would provide a permanent solution for the storage of low and intermediate level nuclear waste (L&ILW). The waste is currently stored in warehouses and in-ground containers at the surface at the Western Waste Management Facility (WWMF) at the Bruce Nuclear site. The present system of storage has always been considered an interim solution.
The Municipality of Kincardine first approached OPG in 2001 about the long-term management of L&ILW at the Bruce Nuclear site and, in 2002, a joint Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed between OPG and Kincardine to study alternate option for the long-term management of the waste.
