Owen Sound Field Naturalists – wildlife

Les Anderson  June 5 (near Allenford)

This little fellow, a Little Brown Bat, spent a few minutes recuperating beside me after he ran into me while chasing a juicy moth that was attracted to my porch light.
I think we were both surprised.
It recovered quickly and went on its way.
I am glad that we have a good colony of these endangered bats in my yard.
They certainly keep the mosquitoes in check.
Turtles by Steve Irvine

Rainy days in early June, and the turtles start laying eggs. This snapping turtle didn’t seem concerned about the leech on her shoulder.

A Swamp Sparrow with an offering. No sign of the fledgling, but the parent kept looking around for a response by William Gray

Green Heron, June 8  near Woodford – by Rob Wray
This male House Finch has been singing up a storm in the trees in my yard lately. They are such colourful little guys.
House Finches are actually native to western North America and Mexico but since a few were released into the wild in 1940 on Long Island in New York State, after a failed attempt to sell them as caged birds, they have spread quite rapidly across Eastern North America as well.  by Les Anderson
